Established in 1941 by the Army Corp of Engineers, the “Punta Gorda Army Airfield” was built for use as a US Army Air force training facility. In later years, those military operations were moved to the MacDill military facility in Tampa, and the Punta Gorda facility was deeded to the Charlotte County Airport Authority.
Now simply known now as the “Punta Gorda Airport” (PGD), the expansive facility has played an important role over the years in the local economy, and with the recent addition of modern terminal facilities, this centrally located airfield is now the regional home of Allegiant Airlines, providing discounted air service to 50+ cities. The PGD passenger counts are now well over a million passengers a year!
